Greg Newport Grabs Fourth Win - Second in Anderson in 2000

26 August 2000 - Anderson, SC - The last doubleheader played in Anderson back in April featured Greg Newport winning the morning event. The same scenario applied this time around as he won again there after carding a second round 27 to pull away from the field. Newport was the only player in the 80's during this tournament, thus making him a four-time winner on the South Carolina Tour in 2000.

Newport trailed first round leaders Andy Coradini and Bob Haizlip by one stroke as he was in at 30. The second round score of 27 put him up two over Coradini with one round to go, and held ground to finish at 88. Newport finished the tournament with a two-shot win over Gary English, who shot the last two rounds of 28 and 29 to pull him into second by himself. The win for Newport, with wins also in Spartanburg and Rock Hill, is a tour leading fourth of the season with only two events left, one of those being here in Anderson. Ironically, the rounds Newport shot (30, 27, 31) were the exact same rounds shot by him earlier this year in his April win in Anderson.

Players learned that newer fast carpeting was placed on five holes of the back nine, including the very difficult hole 16. With that, scores generally were lower on average than in the past. In fact, the cash line was at 96, its lowest since August 5, 1990 when the line was at 95.

William Glisson had an easy time the first two rounds of the morning, but ran into trouble in the third and final round. Hovering with a four-stroke lead over Chris Hudson, Glisson only shot a final round two-under 34 which included a four and a five that round, but it was just enough to escape with a two shot win over Hudson and Billy Caudle. Glisson shot 94 for his first win of the season in South Carolina. Hudson and Caudle each shot 96 for a tie for second.

English ended up with his best finish of the season, second at 90 for the 29-player field. Todd Barfield used a final round 27 to finish tied for third with Randy Reeves at 91. A slew of five players finished tied for fifth at 93, which include Darrell Britt, Edgar Hollifield, Tony Jackson, Robert Johnson and Tony Pack. There were 14 spots paid out in this event with an that score of 96 placing as Bob Jackson was the only player who shot it.

The qualifying spots from this tournament went to Coradini, who received only the State Championship spot into Spartanburg, and Barfield, who took the Match Play spot, to be played on Sunday.
