Winner of 2000 Twin-Cities Open on the PPA North
Carolina State Tour |
Glenwood Arrington pulled out a surprise win after he
fired steady and consistent rounds of 26, 26, and 27 to card out the tournament best score
of 79. The retired truck driver from Martinsville, Virginia picked up his first regular
season win on both the North Carolina and South Carolina tours, and grabbed his first win
since winning the 1995 NCPPA Championship held in Martinsville. Arrington's victory also
marked the seventh different winner on the NC tour in as many tournaments played and the
fifth on the SC tour in as many events as well.
Jimmy Comer becomes only the third different first-time winner on
the North Carolina APA tour winning by two shots over points leader Keith Waters. Comer
opened the tournament with the lead at 26 and led throughout the event. Waters was
contesting him round-for-round, but could not catch Comer down the stretch run, thus
giving the former two-time North Carolina APA champion his first win of the season.
Arrington won by one stroke over three players including Ray Guthrie, Robert Johnson,
and Larry Simpson, all finishing at 80. Johnson was the leader after the second round at
51. Gary English, who led the first round at 25, and Todd Fowler each finished in a tie
for fifth at 82.
Arrington took both the NC State Qualifying spot and Match Play spot as well for later
this year. Johnson defeated Guthrie and Simpson in a playoff for the SC State Qualifying
Spot and Guthrie took the SC Match Play spot.
The North Carolina PPA and South Carolina PPA will play again Sunday, April 30, at
9:00am in Winston-Salem for the Carolinas' Open. The pros will be playing six rounds while
the APA will be playing four rounds. The defending champion of this event is Kevin Lacey.
After that, North Carolina will be playing next weekend in Lumberton and White Lake. The
tournament in Lumberton will begin at 12:00 noon on Saturday, and the tournament in White
Lake will begin at 10:00am on Sunday.
