Bob Haizlip Wins NC Tour Event in
White Lake, NC
7 May 2000 - White Lake, NC - More hot weather for the weekend was in store in White
Lake, as 23 professionals and six amateurs battled through hazy sunshine and temperatures
flirting near 90 degrees during the event.
You could not tell if Bob Haizlip's play in the early going was
hotter than the air itself as he opened up a two-stroke lead on Mike Brown and David McCaslin, when he started the
tournament at 13-under 23. Haizilp then shot the second lowest round of the tournament at
24 to take a four stroke advantage over the 1996 National Champion in Brown.
Haizlip, the only player in the 40's after two rounds, coasted to victory with a final
round 29 as he won his second ever PPA tournament with a final score of 76. Haizlip won by
three strokes over Brown and McCaslin.
Keith Waters himself was playing hotter than the
temperature as he opened up the APA tournament at 25 and would not cool off as he recorded
a four-shot victory over Billy Caudle. Waters' win is the tour's leading fourth victory of
the season and has the overall lead in the points race by 25.5 points over Jimmy Comer.
Billy Caudle ended his two-event win streak with a second place finish at 84, and has
third place in the standings, trailing Waters by 29points at the halfway point of the
season, while Comer has maintained his second place position in the points with a score of
87, and trails by 27 to Waters.
After Haizlip's outstanding score and win, Brown and McCaslin were the only two other
players who broke 80 for the day, as they shot 79. Finishing out the top five were Robert
Johnson, Rick Rybaczek, and Larry Simpson, all tied for fourth at 80. Eleven spots were
paid out in this event as the score of 82 was placed in as a full share. The State
Championship and Match Play spots went to Haizlip for his victory on Sunday. Tommy
Hutchinson got the APA two-day low non-qualifier spot.
Special thanks was also given to John Womble and his family, the owners of the White
Lake course, for hosting the Glass Bottom Open and their welcomed hospitality.
The next tournament on the schedule for North Carolina is on Saturday, May 27, at
12:00pm in Martinsville, Virginia on Course 1 as reigning state champion Bart Bason looks
to extend his tour win streak on that course to four. Then, on Sunday, they will travel to
High Point for the Wayne Hancock Memorial, also being defended by Bason, on Course 1,
starting at 10:00am.
