Greg Newport Wins $2,000 Pepsi-Cola Open
31
July 2000 - Fayetteville, NC - Greg
Newport, trailing by one stroke to Greg
Ward after the first round, put together a second round of 25 to post a
two-round total of 46. Newport's total of 46, 26-under par, bettered Ward's
total of 47 by one stroke. In a tie for third were Peter
Neumann and Randy
Reeves who shot 49. One stroke behind at 50 were five players, Lee
Messinger, Rick
Alessi, David
Lynch, John
Napoli, and Bart
Bason.
Greg Ward provided the highlight of the day as he aced the first sixteen
holes to open his first round. Tournament play on the course came to a stop as
word spread that Ward was perfect through twelve holes. The gallery grew as
Ward aced holes thirteen through sixteen. Ward's ace on the difficult
sixteenth hole appeared to put him on track to record just the third perfect
round in Putt-Putt history. Ward's putt on the seventeenth hole proved to be
too hard and as it lipped on the right side of the cup. Ward finished his
round with a deuce on the eighteenth hole for a first round score of 20,
16-under par, and a one stroke lead over Greg Newport, Bart Bason, and Todd
Fowler.
In the APA division, Philip Wagoner used rounds of 28 and 24 to post a two
round score of 52, 22-under par, and a one stroke victory over Wesley Pollard.
Pollard's rounds of 26 and 27 gave him the second place. Jonathan Moore
finished alone in third at 54 with Karl Moe alone in fourth at 55.
The PPA begins the $100,000 PPA National Championship on Tuesday, August
1st, at the Fayetteville, NC course. Over 100 players will be competing for
the 2000 PPA National Championship over the three days of competition.
