Gilliland Starts Slow But Wins SEI Open

23 July 2000 - Columbus, IN - Shawn Gilliland of Indianapolis shot a 1 under par 35 in the first round of the SEI Communications Open but came back strong with rounds of 27, 26 and 29 to win the Columbus event by 4 strokes. Tom Gross of Columbus was second with a 72 hole total 121. Gilliland fired identical 9 hole scores of 13 and 13 to take the lead from Gross by one shot after round 3. He finished with a 7 under par 29, 3 strokes better than Gross's 32 to take the victory, his second on the 2000 tour. Charlie Greenwalt of Indianapolis finished third with a 22 under par 122.

Tom Gross of Columbus won his second Match Play title of the 2000 Indiana PPA Tour in the SEI Communications Open. Gross defeated Jim Garrison of Mooresville in the first round 3 and 2. He made the first 7 holes in his match against Charlie Greenwalt of Indianapolis and went on to win 4 and 3. Gross met Jim Bryant of Clayton, Indiana in the 36 hole final that he won 5 and four. The win improves his match play record to 6 and 4 on the year.

Bill Hammons fired a 17 under par 127 to win the SEI Communications Open amateur event in Columbus. Hammons shot consistent rounds of 32, 32, 31 and 32 to take the top spot by 7 shots over Mike Lebeda of Terre Haute. Hammons led by only one shot after the first round when Lebeda suffered a putters nightmare on hole 18, taking a 7 and shooting a 3 over par 39. Jim Brown of Columbus playing in his first ever state event finished 3rd with a 5 under par 139.

Nate Nichols of Columbus started playing local tournament events in June. He fired a 7 under par 137 to win the novice division in the SEI Communications Open. His score the 3rd best in the amateur and novice divisions allowed him to enter the amateur match play competition where he defeated Mike Moon of Columbus, Mike Lebeda of Terre Haute and Chuck Gulley of Terre Haute in the final 1-up 37 holes.

IPPT Tournament Director Jim Bryant has announced the times and events for the 2000 Indiana State Putt-Putt Championships. The event is scheduled for Saturday August 19th and Sunday August 20th at the 34th Street Putt-Putt in Indianapolis.
