John Napoli Wins in Springfield, OH on Great Lakes Tour
09 July 2000 – Springfield, OH – John Napoli is the defending PPA National Champion and now is tournament winner on the Great Lakes Tour. Rounds of 28, 26, and 30 enabled John to win the Great Lakes Tour event in Springfield, OH. The weather was perfect for the Great Lakes Tour stop in Springfield, OH.
John trailed first round leader Gene Reams by three shots. Gene first round score of 25 gave him a two shot lead. John with a second round score of 26 took over the lead and would eventually give him the win with a final round score of 28 and a three round score of 84. Since, John was not attempting to qualify for the finals a playoff had to be played in order to give the spot away. The players participating in the playoff were Gene Reams, Ken Hastings, and Mike O’Rourke. All three players shot scores of 86, 22-under par. After 18 holes Gene and Mike were still tied and to go to a sudden death playoff and was won by Gene on the first extra holes. A field of 26 professionals and 14 amateurs participated in the event.
In the amateur division, Mike Bell defeated Andy McCoy in a playoff. Mike and Andy shot scores of 92, 16-under par. In the match play event, Karl Moe defeated James Weber.
The Great Lakes Tour will play its next full weekend on July 15 and 16 in Columbus, OH at the Refugee Road Course.
