Heikkinen Wins His First in 2000 on Great Lakes Tour
11 June 2000 – Newark, OH – Once again we had great weather for the Great Lakes Tour stop in Newark, OH. Jim Heikkinen won his first tournament in the Great Lakes Tour in almost 4 years and he won from start to finish. Jim shot a final score of 86 – 22 under par and was two shots better than Jim Engel. Engel finished the day shooting a score of 88 – 20 under par. The day was not all lost for Jim Engel who won the match play event by defeating John Kropinak. This was Engle’s first spot in the Great Lakes Tour Finals and Heikkinen’s second spot into the Great Lakes Tour Finals. Heikkinen was one of the last players to finish the final round and coming down the stretch was trying to finish out the tournament in grad style by making a final ace on his last hole, but did not when his shot went arrant and hit the first of two bricks that one the hole. Jim bogeyed the hole, but in the final count did not hurt him because he won by 2 stokes.
In the amateur division, Mike Conklin defeated former National Champion Jeff Brown in a playoff. Both players shot a score of 88. In the match play event, Mike Bell defeated John Darst.
The Great Lakes Tour will play its next full weekend on June 24 in Hamilton, OH and June 25 in Middletown, OH.
