South Carolina Leads 2000 Clayton
Cup After First Day of Competition
14 October 2000 - Richmond, VA - The South Carolina Tour, playing in
their second Clayton Cup matches, once again holds the lead after the
first day. Through the better-ball and alternate shot matches, the South
Carolina team scored points in each of the matches and won three of the
five better-ball matches and won or tied four of the five alternate shot
matches. The two-player team matches that closed the first day of the
Clayton Cup saw the North Carolina and Great Lakes teams pick up some
ground but the South Carolina team still hold a commanding lead going
into the second, and final day, of the Clayton Cup matches.
Some highlights of the first day included four perfect nines being
shot in the better-ball matches and one perfect nine being shot in the
alternate shot matches. Robert Johnson and Randy Reeves opened their
alternate shot match by firing a perfect front nine to take control of
their match that they eventually won by a commanding seven stroke
margin. In the two-player team matches, Bill Kirby fired a perfect front
nine to lead Randal Smith and himself to a win in their match.
With the same number of points available in the Sunday matches, the
2000 Clayton Cup is still up for grabs but any of the three teams will
need to play three spectacular rounds and get some help from the other
teams to catch the South Carolina team.

South Carolina posted the strongest finish in the better-ball matches
winning three of the five matches and finishing in second (or a tie for
second in the other two matches). Virginia won two of the better-ball
matches and finished second in two others to be in second place. The
North Carolina team earned points in each of the better-ball matches but
did not win a match and ended the round in third place. The Great Lakes
team struggled in the early matches not winning points in the first
three but rallied to earn points in the final two matches.
