Randal Smith Wins 1999 Virginia State Championship
Lynchburg, VA - 3 October 1999 - After opening with a first round of 29,
7-under par, Randal Smith fired consecutive rounds of 25, 11-under par, to lead the field
of 26 professionals at the 1999 Virginia State Championship. With a three round total of
79, 29-under par, Smith lead Andy Coradini by
three strokes and a group of three players at 84 by five strokes entering the final round.
The total purse offered in the 1999 Virginia State Championship totaled $5,120.
The three players making the biggest move in the fourth and final round
were Robert Johnson
whose final round of 23, 13-under par, moved him into a tie for third, Bill Kirby, Jr. whose
final round of 25 moved him into second place, and Greg Newport whose
final round of 25 moved him into fifth place. Defending 1998 Virginia State Champion Peter Neumann was
among those players tied for third entering the final round faded to finish in a tie for
sixth place with Dave
Taylor who won the previous day on this same
course. Andy Coradini who entered the final round in second place finished in a tie
for third shooting a final round of 28, 8-under par. Rounding out the top 10 in the
professional field were Todd Barfield who
finished in eighth at 114, 30-under par, and four players, Brad Lebo, Mike Brown, Rick Baird, and C. L. Jones, tied for
ninth at 116, 28-under par.

In the amateur division, Malcolm Shumaker defeated Ray
Guthrie in an 18-hole playoff to win the 1999 Amateur Virginia State Championship title.
Finishing in a four-way tie for third place were Wayne Cheatham, Steven Jones, Billy
Caudle, and David Sharp, who all finished at 120, 24-under par, and one-stroke behind
Shumaker and Guthrie. Finishing in a tie for seventh place was Matt Coghill at 121,
23-under par.
Also announced at the 1999 Virginia State Championship were the Virginia
Team members for the 1999 Clayton Cup
to be held in Wilmington, North Carolina on October 23-24. The Virginia Team, captained by
Buddy Taylor, will consist of Mike Brown, Brad Lebo, Peter Neumann, Gilbert Sharpe, Dave
Taylor, Rusty Taylor, Kevin Garrett, Ed Grajewski, Manfred Stewart, and Buddy Taylor. The
Virginia Team will be trying to win the Clayton for the first time since 1995 when they
defeated the North Carolina Team in Greensboro, North Carolina. The North Carolina Team
has defeated the Virginia Team in each of the last three years including twice on Virginia
courses.
The next event for many of these players is the South Carolina State
Championship being held in Anderson, South Carolina on the weekend of October 9-10
followed by the North Carolina State Championship being held on October 16-17 in Durham,
North Carolina.
