Mike Brown Wins His Third Virginia Open Title
Richmond,
VA - Temperatures into the high 90's and high humidity made for sweltering playing
conditions and extremely low scores. Mike Brown, winner of the Virginia State event the
previous morning on this course, was looking to capture his third Virginia Open title.
Brown, winner of the 1992 and 1993 Virginia Opens, had been close to winning the Virginia
Open several times but had not been able to capture his third Virginia Open until 1999.
Brown opened with a strong round of 22, 14-under par, to lead Gary Hinshaw
by two-strokes and a group of four players at 25 by three strokes. The second round saw
1995 Virginia Open champion Peter Neumann shoot a 22, 14-under par, to put himself into
the lead at 47, 25-under par. Neumann continued his hot play in the third round shooting a
24, 12-under par, but Brown made his move shooting his second 22 of the day to move into a
tie at 71, 37-under par, entering the final round.
Brown fired a final round of 25, 11-under par, to finish at 96, 48-under
par, for a two-stroke victory. Neumann faltered on the front nine missing holes 2, 3, and
4 and then missing the tenth hole to start the back nine. Neumann's final round of 27 gave
him a four round total of 98, 46-under par. The 1994 Virginia Open Champion Greg Newport
put together a final round of 23 to also finish at 98 along with Rich Gillooly who shot a
final round of 24 to finish at 98. Rich Gillooly won the sudden death playoff and took
home the second place trophy.
Rusty Taylor, coming off a disappointing opening round of 31, fired a
perfect front nine en route to rounds of 23, 24, and 23 to finish tied for fifth at 101
with Ed Grajewski. Tied for seventh were the 1998 Virginia Open winner Manfred Stewart and
Dave Taylor. In a tie at ninth and 103 were Gilbert Sharpe and Todd Barfield. Rounding out
the money winners was Ken Cook at 104.
In the amateur division, Wesley Pollard and Malcolm Shumaker were tied at
77, 31-under par, entering the final round. Both fired six-under par, 12's, on the front
nine to remain tied entering the final nine holes of play. Pollard's final nine of 13,
5-under par, placed him at 102, 42-under par, one stroke ahead of Shumaker for the
victory. Finishing in third was Chuck Cyr at 105. Tied for fourth were Wayne Cheatham and
Joe Gallagher. Finishing in a three-way tie for sixth were Gil Logan, Jonathan Moore, and
William Glisson at 108.
