Mike Brown Wins Again at Richmond on the Virginia
State Tour
Richmond, VA - Mike Brown continued his
winnings ways at the Richmond, VA Putt-Putt Golf course. Brown won the first Virginia
State event on this course in 1999 and won this event, a make-up for a rain-out from
April. Brown's path to victory was not an easy one.
Brad Lebo opened with a course record tying round of 20 to lead Brown and
the field by two-strokes after the first round. Lebo's round of 20, 16-under par, was the
product of front and back nine of 10, 8-under par. Lebo cooled of in the second round and
shot a round of 27, 9-under par, to hold a one stroke lead at 47, 25-under par, over Brown
whose second round of 26, 10-under par, picked up one-stroke on Lebo.
Brown's final round of 27, 9-under par, was enough to pass Lebo, who
faltered with a final round of 29 and hold off Gary Hinshaw and Gilbert Sharpe who closed
with rounds of 25 and 23 respectively. Finishing in fourth was Ken Cook who posted rounds
of 24 and 24 after a disappointing opening round of 29 to post a total of 77. Rounding out
the money winners were Bart Bason at 78, Danny Dore and Thomas Rawles at 79, and Mike
Damsky and Rodney Ashely at 80.
Once again, the amateurs put up scores that nearly matched the
professional scores on the same course. Matt Summey, continuing his strong play in 1999,
posted a two-stroke victory shooting 76, 32-under par, for the three rounds. Summey closed
with a final round of 25, 11-under par, to break out of a three-way tie for the lead at 51
after two rounds. Finishing in second was William Glisson whose consistent rounds of 26,
26, and 26 for a total of 78 was only good enough for a second place finish. Rounding out
the money winners in the amateur field were Wesley Pollard at 79 and Chuck Cyr, Randy
Fitzgerald, and Matt Coghill all at 80.
