Mike Brown Wins by Three in First Event in State of
Virginia for 1999
Richmond, VA - Mike Brown began his
year in Richmond, VA on the Virginia State Tour as he has for the last four years with a
win. With rounds of 24 and 23 he opened a three stroke lead over eventual runner-up, Bart Bason, who opened
with rounds of 26 and 24. Shooting an 11, 7-under par, on the front nine of the last
round, Mike opened up a comfortable lead and coasted home with a 15, 3-under par, on the
final nine for his eventual three stroke victory.
Bart Bason finished in second with rounds of 26, 24, and 26 for a total of
76, 32-under par, and second place prize money of $110. Buddy Taylor,
continuing his good play from the end of 1998 and the Durham/Roxboro weekend in March,
finished in third with rounds of 27, 25, and 25 for a total of 77, 31-under par. Buddy
Taylor's tournament was punctuated by making 12 consecutive aces, the first five finishing
his second round and the last seven starting his final round.
The amateur division saw the lowest score posted for the day. Ken Cook
posted rounds of 25, 22, and 24 for a total of 71, 37-under par, and a 9 stroke victory
over Matt Summey and David Sharp who tied for second at 80, 28-under par. Ken Cook's 22
was the second shot on this day as Gary Hinshaw, manager of the Richmond course posted a
22 in his first round of play. Also of note was a perfect nine shot on the front nine of
the course by Russell Johnson in the second round.
