Peter Neumann Wins VA/NC Event in Lynchburg, VA
Lynchburg, VA - The second of the two NC/VA combined weekends
was here at the site of 1999 Virginia State Championship in Lynchburg. On Saturday, Peter Neumann became
one of the early favorites here with his first NC and first VA state victory with rounds
of 26, 28, and 29 to finish with a score of 83. The win for the 1998 Virginia State
Champion and 1996 North Carolina State Champion was by two shots over Rusty Taylor, Severn,
MD., who shot rounds of 30, 28, and 27 to finish at 85.
In the APA Division, Joe Gallagher, Pittsburgh, PA., led the 22-player field from
wire-to-wire to win by two strokes over Matt Summey, Richmond, VA. Gallagher posted rounds
of 28, 31, and 30 to capture his second consecutive victory on the Virginia tour and his
first on the North Carolina tour with a score of 89. Rounding out the top five in APA were
Wayne Cheatham and 1998 VA APA Champion Chuck Cyr at 92, and 1998 NC APA Champion Billy
Caudle at 93.
The win by Neumann was his first since the Virginia State Championship and the first NC
win since winning the 1996 NC State Championship in New Bern. Taylor received both the NC
State and Match Play spots with his second place finish. Brad Lebo, Shippensburg,
PA., received the other available Match Play spot after finishing tied for third at 86.
Rounding out the top five in the Pro Division were along with Lebo, Danny McCaslin,
Cary, NC, at 86, Rick
Baird, Pineville, NC, Tony Jackson,
Spartanburg, SC, and Greg
Newport, Liberty, NC, all at 88. Finishing out the top ten were Bo Luthie, Poquoson, VA.,
at 89, and Bart Bason,
Gibsonville, NC, Mike
Brown, Rock Hill, SC, Michael Hitt,
Greensboro, NC, and Buddy
Taylor, Severn, MD., at 90. Fifteen spots were paid out with 91 holding as a three-way
tie for 13th thus giving full share.
The next tournament is Sunday, July 11, in Lynchburg, at 11:00am.
