Lebo Shoots 21 in Second Round on Way to Victory in
Fredericksburg, VA Event
Fredericksburg, VA - Brad Lebo entered the
second round of play five strokes off the lead held by Gilbert Sharpe who shot an opening
round 25, 11-under par. Lebo then fired an amazing 22 aces in the next 27 holes to turn
the five stroke deficit into a four stroke lead with the final nine holes to play. Lebo's
second round of 21, 15-under par, shattered the existing course record and place him at
51, 21-under par, for two rounds and two strokes ahead of Danny Dore in second
place.
With an 11, 7-under par, on the front nine the final round, Lebo built a
four stroke lead going into the final nine. His 14, 4-under par, back nine was more than
enough to clinch the victory by five strokes over the 15 player professional field. The
victory is Lebo's first of 1999 on the Virginia tour and further solidifies his position
on top of the Virginia State points standings.
In the amateur field, Joe
Gallagher entered the final round three strokes behind Amy Smith who held the amateur lead
at 54, 18-under par, entering the final round. Gallagher's 11, 7-under par, front nine
pulled him into the lead and his closing round 24, 12-under par, earned him a two stroke
victory over Wayne Cheatham. Gallagher's total of 81, 27-under par, bettered the amateur
winning score of June 5th by five strokes and was his first victory of 1999 on the
Virginia State Tour.
The next event on the Virginia tour schedule is the Palmetto Classic in
Spartanburg, SC on Sunday, June 27th. The Palmetto Classic will count towards the minimum
tournament required for participation in the Virginia State Championship but will not
count towards money winnings, stroke average, or points. The Virginia tour plays a
co-sponsored weekend of tournaments in Lynchburg, VA on July 10 and 11 with the North
Carolina state tour.
