Manfred Stewart Wins VA State Event in Fredericksburg,
VA by Two Strokes
Fredericksburg, VA - Trailing a group of four players tied for
the lead after two-round of play at 55, Manfred Stewart put
together a final round of 26, 10-under par, to take the victory at the Fredericksburg, VA
course. Entering the final round, Peter Neumann, Brad Lebo, Ed Grajewski,
and Bo Luthie were all
tied at 55, 17-under par. These players could do no better than 30, 6-under par, in their
final rounds and three way tie for second at 85, 23-under par, between Neumann, Lebo, and
Luthie.
The Fredericksburg course was recarpeted with the new, slower carpet and
it appeared as though the scores would be significantly lower entering the final round.
Stewart was the only player whose total score was under 60 after two round who managed to
shoot under 30 in their final round. The win marks a repeat victory for Stewart who won
last year on this course.
In the amateur field, Chuck Cyr and Wayne Cheatham were separated by a
single stroke entering the final round, 55 and 56 respectively. Cyr's final round of 31,
5-under par, left him with a final total of 86, 22-under par. Cheatham, playing in the
third to last group, was able to tie Cyr with a final round of 30, 6-under par, to force
an 18-hole playoff. Cyr gained an early edge in the playoff leading the three strokes
after the first nine holes and was able to extend the final margin to four strokes by the
end of the playoff shooting a 28, 8-under par, to Cheatham's 32, 4-under par.
The Virginia tour is next in action on Sunday, June 6th, again in
Fredericksburg, VA. The next event on the Virginia tour schedule is the Palmetto Classic
in Spartanburg, SC on Sunday, June 27th. The Palmetto Classic will count towards the
minimum tournament required for participation in the Virginia State Championship but will
not count towards money winnings, stroke average, or points. The Virginia tour plays a
co-sponsored weekend of tournaments in Lynchburg, VA on July 10 and 11 with the North
Carolina state tour.
