Manfred Stewart Wins VA State Event in Fredericksburg, VA by Two Strokes

Stewart.jpg (14590 bytes)Fredericksburg, VA - Trailing a group of four players tied for the lead after two-round of play at 55, Manfred Stewart put together a final round of 26, 10-under par, to take the victory at the Fredericksburg, VA course. Entering the final round, Peter Neumann, Brad Lebo, Ed Grajewski, and Bo Luthie were all tied at 55, 17-under par. These players could do no better than 30, 6-under par, in their final rounds and three way tie for second at 85, 23-under par, between Neumann, Lebo, and Luthie.

The Fredericksburg course was recarpeted with the new, slower carpet and it appeared as though the scores would be significantly lower entering the final round. Stewart was the only player whose total score was under 60 after two round who managed to shoot under 30 in their final round. The win marks a repeat victory for Stewart who won last year on this course.

In the amateur field, Chuck Cyr and Wayne Cheatham were separated by a single stroke entering the final round, 55 and 56 respectively. Cyr's final round of 31, 5-under par, left him with a final total of 86, 22-under par. Cheatham, playing in the third to last group, was able to tie Cyr with a final round of 30, 6-under par, to force an 18-hole playoff. Cyr gained an early edge in the playoff leading the three strokes after the first nine holes and was able to extend the final margin to four strokes by the end of the playoff shooting a 28, 8-under par, to Cheatham's 32, 4-under par.
