Playoff

prevailed over Peter
Neumann on the fifth hole of sudden death after both players tied during the 18-hole
playoff at 31, 5-under par. Both Sharpe and Neumann had finished the regulation 72-hole
event at 120, 24-under par, on the difficult and windblown Charlottesville, VA course.
Sharpe opening round of 25, 11-under par, gave him a lead that he held or
shared for the rest of the day. After 36-holes, Sharpe held a two-stroke lead over Neumann
and a three-stroke lead over Dave Taylor, who
eventually finished third at 121. Sharpe shared the lead after three rounds with Neumann
at 87, 21-under par, and both players struggled through a difficult final round to each
post final rounds of 33, 3-under par, and force the playoff. The 18-hole playoff resulted
in a tie at 31, 5-under par, and went into sudden-death with Sharpe winning with an ace on
the fifth hole of sudden death.
The scoring in the professional field was grouped tightly as the top eight
players finished within three strokes of the winning score. A total of 12 of the16
professionals finished within six strokes of the winnng total making the final round
eventful for most of the players in the field.
In the amateur division, Matt Summey posted the best total score of the
day at 118, 26-under par, and coasted to an eleven stroke victory over Steven Jones, Wayne
Cheatham, and Joe Gallagher who all finished tied for second at 129, 15-under par. The
victory was Summey's first of the year on the Virginia tour.
The Virginia tour is next in action on Saturday and Sunday, June 5th and
6th, in Fredericksburg, VA. As a reminder, the Carolinas' Open held on Sunday, May16th, in
Rock Hill, SC will count toward the minimum tournament requirement on the Virginia tour
but will not count toward the statistics kept by the Virginia tour (points, stroke
average, money winnings, etc.).
