Don Parker Wins Playoff in Tyler, TX for First
Tour Title of 1999 Season
Tyler, TX - Rosenberg's Don Parker aced the 17th and 18th holes of an
18-hole playoff to hold off defending champion David Lynch of Mesquite
and earn his first tour title of 1999. Parker and Lynch finished regulation play with
identical 83's, 25-under par, to force a playoff for the championship for the second
consecutive year (Lynch won a playoff over Greg Roberts here in
1998).
Arlington's Joel Baker was the 36-hole leader at 52 and appeared to be
headed for his second straight tour title before he fell off the pace with a 33 in the
final round and a third place tie with Rainey Statum of
Kingwood at 23-under par 85. Don McCracken from Flower Mound was fifth at 86.
In match play it was David Lynch of Mesquite earning his third state
qualifying spot by defeating Lee Messinger in the finals of his bracket. Joel Baker also
got his third spot with a finals win over Don McCracken in the other bracket.
Gary Plain of Tyler fired a 25-under par 83 to win the APA division by
three strokes over fellow local player Mark Hudgins (86). Gary has been playing in
Putt-Putt tournaments for over twenty years and is excited about the state finals being
here on his home course in October. Jason Sheffield from Fulshur finished third at 89.
Match play qualifiers were Aaron Armstrong (3) and Jon Drexler (4).
