Statum Returns to Winner's Circle in Longview, TX
Longview, TX - Kingwood's Rainey Statum fired a
final round 26 to break out of a pack of ten players within three strokes of the lead
after 36 holes and finished at 87, good for a four stroke cushion and his first tour title
of the season. Making only his third start of 1999, Statum was in mid-season form as he
scorched the back nine in the final round with an 11 on a course most players consider the
toughest on the Texas Tour. The win also earned Rainey his first qualifying spot for the
state finals.
Tom Adair from Tyler and Joel Baker of Arlington shared second place with
17-under par 91's, and Lee Messinger from Dallas was fourth with 15-under par 93.
In match play, Cliff Matthews
topped Lee Messinger in the finals of his bracket to earn his fourth spot for state
weekend. The other bracket saw Joel Baker win his second qualifying spot of the weekend
and fourth overall by defeating Don Parker in the finals.
Mark Hudgins of Tyler, despite having to play with a patch over one eye
due to a torn retina, shot an 11-under par 97 to win the APA division by four strokes over
Jason Sheffield (101) of Fulshur, Texas. Austin's Steve Willmann was third with 111.
Willmann earned his fourth qualifying spot for state weekend in match play and Jason
Sheffield picked up his first.
The "gee whiz" from the Sunday tournament in Longview was that
the defending champions from 1998, Bryan Woolley (PPA) and Jon Drexler (APA), had a
"best round" of 35 and finished dead last in their respective divisions this
year!
