Greg Roberts Sweeps First Texas Tour Weekend
Houston, TX - Greg Roberts staked
himself to a 3 stroke lead at 51 after 2 rounds and held off 4-time state champion Rainey Statum and
former state and defending Texas Open champion Joel Baker to shoot 28 under par 80 and
sweep the Texas Tour's opening weekend. The win earned Roberts his 2nd qualifying spot for
the State Championship in Tyler this fall. Unlike the wet and windy conditions the
players had to deal with on Saturday, it was a perfect spring day in Houston for the
Sunday tournament. In match play it was like an instant replay from Saturday's
tournament. State champion Brice Bergesen extended his unbeaten match play string to an
amazing 13 in a row dating back to last season to win his 2nd qualifying spot of the
weekend as did rookie pro Bill Florian.
In the APA division, Randy Wimpy tied the best round of the day in either
division with a 25 to win an 18-hole playoff with Saturday's winner Andy Gaiser. Gaiser
missed the easy 17th hole during the last round of regulation play to send it to a playoff
and subsequently lost his bid for back-to-back wins. Match play qualifiers in the
APA division were Houstonians Doug Austin and Jon Drexler. The first tour weekend had a
truly local flavor as Houston players in the PPA and APA divisions took 9 of the 12
qualifying spots available for state weekend.
