Mike Brown Wins Again at Rock Hill, SC on SC Tour
Rock Hill, SC - A perfect back nine
proved to be the difference as Mike Brown
opened up the first 36 holes at 49 and a two-stroke lead over Gary English and Edgar
Hollifield and held on by laying up 17 and 18 to win the lead-off tournament for the third
NC/SC combined weekend by one stroke over English and Hollifield.
Hollifield was the first round leader at 23 despite the perfection posted by Brown to
only trail by one. Then, the 1996 PPA National Champion grabbed the lead when Hollifield
posted a 28 in the second round while Brown fired a 25 to lead by two.
Brian Hutchins posted his second win of the season in the APA Division coming back from
five strokes down in the first round shooting 51 in the last two and finish at 82, five
strokes better than Todd Trent, first round leader, at 87 and Ray Guthrie finished in
third with an 88. Temperatures of 95o at the noon tee-off time made conditions
unbearable as it was last week in Memphis. However, due to the extreme heat, scores were
considerably lower than the course had indicated.
Closing out the top five in the Pro Division were Randy Reeves, 1997 PPA Champion at 81, followed by Jay Klapper and Randal Smith tied for fifth
at 82. A seven-way tie for seventh at 83 included Rick Baird, Todd Barfield, Bart Bason, Andy Coradini, Michael Hitt, C. L. Jones, and Jimmy Mott to round out the
top ten of this 37-player field, most in NC or SC since the Carolinas' Open. There were
seventeen money spots available with 85 getting the last spot. Qualifying spots received
from this tournament were as follows: Brown, NC Match Play; English, SC State; Reeves, NC
State; and Smith, SC Match Play. Both tours will be at it again on Sunday, July 25, at
11:00am in Forest City.
