Greg Newport Wins Third Annual Palmetto Classic in Four-way Playoff

newport.jpg (7478 bytes)Spartanburg, SC - Greg Newport won an exciting 4-way playoff to win the 3rd Annual Palmetto Classic in Spartanburg, SC. This year's major state event for the South Carolina Tour involved a dramatic finish. Two-time winner in 1999, Todd Fowler, posted a final round 30 for a 111, then sat back and watched the last 3 players on the course, Andy Coradini, Edgar Hollifield, and Greg Newport, all ace the difficult 18th hole to tie him at 111, 33 under par.

Coradini and Fowler played well in the playoff, but were out of contention at the 16th hole after Hollifield aced it to go to 9 under, one ahead of Newport at that point. Hollifield, seeking his first victory on the SC tour since 1995, then bogeyed the 17th hole after receiving an unfortunate kick off of the right rail to fall back into a tie. Newport then aced 18, and when Hollifield's putt lipped the right edge of the hole, Newport joined Allen Wall and Dan Anders as winners of the Palmetto Classic.

This marks the second straigh year that a playoff was needed to determine a winner, as last year Anders outdueled Bart Bason. Greg Ward rounded out the top five at 114. Former Champions Anders and Wall each finished 6th at 115.

After 12 events on the SC tour, Robert Johnson now holds a very slim lead on Newport in the player of the year standings. The next South Carolina events will be held in Rock Hill, SC and Forest City, NC on July 24th and 25th.
