Robert Johnson Aces Final Four Holes for One Stroke Victory in Anderson, SC
Anderson, SC - 4 September 1999 - Robert Johnson claimed a dramatic victory when he aced the last 4 holes to defeat Tony Jackson by one stroke. Jackson, already in at 90, could only watch as Johnson aced 4 of the most difficult holes on the SC tour. Johnson later remarked that he had never won with such a performance, despite his many years and wins on tour.
The field improved only slightly in the afternoon, with a scoring average of 99.4. Also finishing in the top five were Darrell Britt and Randal Smith, as well as Todd Fowler, Greg Newport and Greg Ward (tied for fifth). Ward rebounded from an opening round 39 to surge into the top five. Bob Haizlip, who had to learn the shots just minutes before the tournament, responded by shooting a very respectable 98 and earned a spot in the SC state and match play championships. Mark Rainey was rewarded for his play in both tournaments by grabbing the two-day spot.
In the amateur division, Jonathon Reid won with a total of 91, 17-under par, with Ray Guthrie and Tommy Hutchinson tied for second at 97, 11-under par.
The next SC event is the SC match play championship on Sunday. Greg Newport held his lead in the SC player of the year race. Newport will claim the title if Robert Johnson is unable to beat him by more than 18 points the day before the state championship on this same Anderson course.
