Jay Klapper Defeats Lewis Burton in Playoff for Win in Anderson, SC
29 May 1999 - Anderson, SC - Jay Klapper held off Lewis Burton in a playoff to win his first SC state title of the year. The win was Jay's 19th career SC win. Klapper and Burton both shot 92, then Klapper won the playoff 29-31, despite a 5 on the 18th hole. Klapper seemingly had the win locked up after 53 holes, but then took a 4 on the difficult 18th hole.
Klapper's playing partners, Michael Hitt and Greg Ward, each had a chance to tie Jay but missed their ace putts on 18. They both finished at 93, tied for third. Rounding out the top five was Rick Rybaczek, 2 strokes back at 94. Klapper's win allowed him to claim a spot in the state championship and match play championship. The difficult Anderson course yielded only 6 scores below thirty in the morning session. No one in the field of 22 was able to break 30 in the final round.
In the amateur division, Tommy Hutchinson held off Todd Trent in a playoff, 30-36, for the victory. In the novice division, Tracy Logan shot 108 to ensure a comfortable margin of victory.
