Mike Brown Wins for Third Time in 1999 on South Carolina State Tour in Anderson

brown.jpg (7694 bytes)Anderson, SC - 9 October 1999 - Mike Brown won his 3rd South Carolina event this year as the SC tour closed out its regular season. Brown shot an impressive 84, highlighted by a second-round 26, en route to a 6 shot victory. Brown was tied for the lead after the first round with Michael Hitt and Dan Anders, who eventually both finished tied for third, but he pulled away with the low round of the tournament in round 2.

Greg Ward, also a winner of 3 SC events this year, finished 2nd with a score of 90. There was a four-way tie for third place, with Greg Newport and Tony Varnadore joining Hitt and Anders at 91. As usual, the course played extremely difficult, yielding only 10 sub-30 rounds, and 16 over-par rounds. Average score for the field was 33.3 per round.

Several players received special recognition for their play this year. Greg Newport turned 2 wins and a very consistent season into his first South Carolina Player of the Year title. Newport was the leading money winner for the regular season with earnings of $1049. Newport will now be trying to become the first player in South Carolina history to win the state championship in the same year as he won the Player of the Year title. Also, Frank Warren was recognized as the winner of the Bob Jackson Sportsmanship Award, given yearly to the player who has demonstrated the exemplary qualities we all strive for. Both players were honored at the annual banquet Saturday night.

The inaugural South Carolina Clayton Cup Team was also finalized. This year's team includes Robert Johnson, Todd Fowler, Michael Hitt, Tony Jackson, Greg Ward, Gary English, Jay Klapper, Frank Warren, Lewis Burton, and Tony Varnadore. Johnson, Hitt, and Jackson have represented the NC team in previous years, but the rest of the team will be making their first appearances in the annual event. Gary English was elected to serve as the captain.
