Greg Newport Uses Final Round of 24 to Win by 4 at
White Lake, NC
White Lake, NC -
Greg
Newport followed the pattern set in the first 3 NC State Events of the winners
finishing strong and shooting in the 70's. Greg Newport's final round of 24 matched the
final round of the winners at both Lumberton and Durham and was 3 strokes worse than the
21 carded by Kevin Lacey to win the
Roxboro, NC event. The winning score of 76, 32-under par, also marked the fourth
consecutive NC event won with a score in the 70's in 1999.
Newport entered the final round tied with
Brad Lebo at 52, 20-under par, but was able
to open up his eventual four stroke margin of victory when Lebo fired a closing round of
33, 3-under par. Larry Simpson
finished in second closing with a 25, 11-under par, final round for a total of 80,
28-under par. Bill Kirby, Jr., the 1998
NC State Champion, also finished strong with a 24, 12-under par, for a total of 81,
27-under par, and third place.
The NC State Tour next plays at the Old Pro Classic in Fayetteville, NC on
Friday, April 23rd, teeing off at 9 AM. The first National event of the year, the
1999 Eastern Open, will be played in
Fayetteville, NC on Saturday and Sunday, April 24th and 25th.
