Kevin Lacey Sweeps First Weekend of Events for 1999 on
NC and VA Tours with Win at Roxboro, NC
Roxboro, NC - Heavy rain the morning of March 21st
threatened to force a cancellation of the NC/VA event at the Roxboro, NC course. A gap in
the rain beginning at 10:45 AM allowed the tournament to be played although the start was
delayed until 12 Noon to allow for practice and the course to be blown. A unique ruling
was necessary due to flooding on both the second and sixth holes. The second hole was
completely submerged and the sixth hole, a up-and-back hole, had standing water on the
fairway. Bart Bason, Chairman of the NC
State tour, decided to credit each player with an ace on the second hole and a deuce on
the sixth during all three rounds of play. As a result, par for the event was actually 105
and only 16 holes were played each round.
Tony Varnadore,
leader after two-rounds of play, was passed by Kevin Lacey who shot a final-round 21, 15
under-par, for a two-stroke victory over Andy
Coradini who closed with final round of 25, 11-under par. The final round 21, in which
Kevin made 14 of 16 holes he played (note above that two holes were not played due to
standing water), came less than 12 months after his 19 in the fifth round of the 1998
Southern Open which also propelled him to victory in that event. The victory at Roxboro,
NC gave Kevin Lacey a sweep of the event held on this, the first weekend of events for
both the North Carolina and Virginia tours.
With the course drying more each round, average scoring improved each
round as the average scores improved from 29.53 in the first round to 29.18 in the second
round and 28.68 in the third round. The average professional score for the event was
87.32.
In the amateur division, Gil Logan put on a dominating performance with
rounds of 27, 26, 27 for a total of 80, 28-under par, and a five stroke victory over
Donnie Carpenter, winner of the tournament at Durham the day before, and Billy Caudle.
The total professional purse for this event was $1,015 with the profits
from the event being split between the North Carolina and Virginia tours. The next events
on the Virginia tour will occur in Richmond, Virginia on April 10 and 11. The next North
Carolina events will occur on April 17 in Lumberton, NC and on April 18 in White Lake, NC.
The South Carolina tour will be playing their first events on March 27 and 28 in Rock
Hill, SC.
