Andy Coradini Wins 1999 North Carolina Match-Play
Championship
High Point, NC - 26 September 1999 - Coming out of
the loser's bracket after losing to Buddy
Taylor in the semifinal round, Andy
Coradini defeated Mike Brown to get
back into the championship round against Taylor and defeated him twice in that round to
win the 1999 NCPPA Match Play Championship held in High Point, North Carolina.
The 1993 National Champion from Loganville, GA earned a first-round bye when he was low
qualifier in the second tournament of the season held in Roxboro.
He then ran through some stiff competition narrowly defeating Tony Jackson 1 up, then
also narrowly
defeating Allen Wall 1 up as well, cruised through Larry Simpson 6 up before losing to
Taylor in the first hole of sudden death. In his only loser's bracket match of the day,
Coradini defeated 1996 National Champion
Mike Brown 3 & 2, to receive another chance at Taylor for the title.
In that match, Coradini made the last seven holes of the front nine to take a 2-up lead
and charged even more on the back to lead by as many as five before ending the first match
on hole 15 to win 4 & 3. In the second match, Coradini made 4 through 7 in succession
while Taylor missed each of those for Coradini to lead by a 4-up count. Taylor tried to
claw back into it when being down 6 after 18, managed to get to within 3-down at one point
on the front before Coradini sealed it down the stretch by ending the event on hole 14 to
win the match 5 & 4 for the title. Coradini earned $350 first prize money for the win
while Taylor earned $250 for being the runner-up.
