Bart Bason Holds on for Victory at Martinsville, VA
Martinsville, VA - The Martinsville, VA course
tested the players with a combination of fast carpet, wind, and the occasional rain shower
to produce some of the highest score of the year on the NC State Tour. While the overall
scores were high, the first round lead was held by Glenwood Arrington who fired a 23,
13-under par, to hold a one-stroke margin over Bart Bason who shot a 24, 12-under, in his
first round and Larry Simpson who shot a 25, 11-under par, in his first round. These three
players who collectively averaged 24 for their first rounds were only able to average
slightly better than 33 for their second round as the Martinsville course began to take
its toll on the players.
Tied for the lead after two round were Bart Bason and Randal Smith who
were at 56, 16-under par, just one stroke ahead of Glenwood Arrington and Larry Simpson at
57. Through two rounds of play, no player in the field was able to record two round under
30.
The final round saw the leaders battling it out for the win. Bart Bason
playing in the first group was able to post a final round of 28, 8-under par, for a total
of 84, 24-under par, while challengers Randal Smith, Glenwood Arrington, and Larry Simpson
were still on the course. Bason's total of 84 held up for a one-stroke victory over
Smith
who came up one stroke short with his final round of 29, 7-under par. With final rounds of
24, 12-under par, Andy Coradini and Gary Hester made the largest final round moves.
The NC State tour moves on to High Point, NC next on Sunday, May 23, and
then takes the Memorial Day weekend off before returning to action on June 5 and 6 in
Asheville, NC with a weekend of co-sponsored events with the SC State tour. The SC State
tour will be in action on Saturday, May 29, with a double-header in Anderson, SC. The
Great Lakes tour will also be in action on the Memorial Day weekend in Charleston, WV,
site of the 1999 Northern Open in August. |
