Danny McCaslin Holds Off Field to Win the Barbara
Nance Memorial
High Point, NC -
Earlier
in the day, Danny McCaslin finished
in a tie for 22nd shooting 66 for his last two rounds. After the one hour break, the Cary,
NC resident led wire-to-wire with the exception of the first round when he was tied
with Andy Coradini at 26, and cruised
to victory by three strokes over four other players to win his second NCPPA tournament of
the season.
Local APA player Jimmy Comer got his winning ways back in High Point
capturing his first APA tournament title of the season by finishing with a total of 82,
including one penalty stroke at the end of the tournament for a scorecard error which did
not affect the outcome. The victory for the 1996 and 1997 NCAPA State Champion was by
three strokes over Tommy Barbour, Graham, NC, with rounds of 29, 29, and 27 for a score of
85. Billy Caudle, Harrisburg, NC, finished third at 86.
McCaslin's win is his first win since
May
5th at Burlington at the Howard Loy Classic. Finishing in a four-way tie for second
were Dan Anders, Columbus, GA,
Andy Coradini, Loganville, GA,
Gary Hester, Thomasville, NC, and Thomas
Rawles, Newport News, VA, all finishing at 84. Hester received the NC State Qualifying
spot by defeating Anders and Rawles in an 18-hole playoff. Hester also received the first
match play spot available from the event. The other match play spot went to
Tony Jackson, Spartanburg, SC.
Bart Bason,
Gibsonville, NC, who defended his earlier victory here, finished sixth at 85. There were
fifteen money spots available with the last money spot being at 89 with three players
receiving a split for the final spot.
Comer's score of 82 coupled with the 91 he posted in the first
tournament of the day gives him the two-day low score of 173 and with that gives him a
spot in the NCAPA State Championship to be held in Durham in October.
The next NCPPA scheduled event is Wednesday, July 7, at 7:30pm in
Winston-Salem. The next scheduled weekend on the NC tour is a combined weekend with the
Virginia tour at Lynchburg, Va. on July 10 and 11.
