Bason Uses Final Round of 26 to Win Wayne Hancock Memorial
High Point, NC - The 13th NCPPA tournament of the 1999 season was held in High Point as a doubleheader tournament on Saturday, June 19th. Cool temperatures and fair skies throughout the early morning greeted the players for the 9 AM start of this event.
Bart Bason, Gibsonville, NC, coming off a disappointing performance in the 1999 Southern Open trailed by one shot after the second round to Thomas Rawles, Newport News, VA, who was in the clubhouse at 54. Bason then proceeded to shoot a final round 10-under par 26 to win the Pro Division by one shot over Andy Coradini, Loganville, GA, and Michael Hitt, Greensboro, NC. Bason finished the tournament with a total of 81; Coradini, who won the May 23rd tournament held here, and Hitt, finished tied for second at 82. Peter Neumann, Midland, VA, finished fourth at 83, while Rawles and Greg Newport, Liberty, NC, rounded out the top five tied at 84. Donnie Carpenter became the third APA player to win his second tournament of the season by shooting rounds of 28 each to finish at 84. The Conover, NC native notched his first win since the first tournament of the season held in Durham on March 20. The win was by three shots over Keith Waters, Raleigh, NC with rounds of 27, 30, and 30 to finish at 87. Third place went to High Point local favorite Ray Guthrie at 90. Neumann's fourth place finish earned him the spots for NC State Championship and the Match Play as well while Rawles received the second play spot available from this tournament.
