Haizlip and Simpson Win North Carolina Team
Championship in High Point, NC
High Point, NC - 25 September 1999 - Bob
Haizlip and Larry Simpson won the North Carolina Team Championships for the second time in
four seasons, ironically both times in High Point, by taking a one-stroke lead after the
fourth round, trailed by three through five rounds, and closed out the final round with a
combined score of 53 to win the championship by three strokes over Dan Anders and Jimmy
Mott.
The winners who come from the Burlington course won
the title in High Point back in 1996 by one stroke. The team used a little magic in the
final round to come from behind, after trailing by three shots themselves to Rick Baird
and Andy Coradini.
Anders and Mott led or shared the lead the first three rounds and stayed in contention
throughout the tournament. In the first two rounds of best ball, the team shot 19 through
an 18-hole stretch of the back nine of the first round and the front nine of the second
round, including a perfect nine on the front in the second round. There were 11 teams in
the tournament, its lowest since the format.
The North Carolina Team Championship format includes two rounds of better ball, two
rounds of alternate shot, and then two rounds of individual play where the scores of both
players on the team are counted. The total for the event is eight rounds of play with par
being 288. The winning total for this year was 213, 75-under par. The NCPPA resumes in
High Point on Sunday, September 26 at 10:00am for the NCPPA Match Play Championship.
