Roberts Wins 1999 Old Pro Classic in Fayetteville, NC
Fayetteville, NC - Texan
Greg Roberts of Pasadena set a new course
record with an opening round 22 and finished with a four round total of 107 to take a one
stroke victory over former national champion
Mike
Brown in the North Carolina Tour's Old Pro Classic. Greg's win in this very
prestigious event was not as easy as it might look on the surface as Brown, play just
ahead of Roberts, fired a final round 24 and was in the clubhouse tied for the lead. That
left Roberts, having aced 4 of his last 5 holes going into the treacherous 18th, needing
an ace to win. He then calmly stroked his putt into the bottom of the cup amidst high
fives from his playing partners
Rick Baird
and Todd Barfield.
"Today is certainly one of the greatest thrills of my putting career" said
Roberts, whose win was his first ever in a North Carolina Tour tournament. "With the
level of competition here today (the field included four recent national champions plus
Greg Newport going for a three-peat in this event) and what this event (created by
Bill Kirby, Jr.) means just makes winning it
something very special".
Mongomery Alabama's
Randy Reeves,
the 1997 PPA National champion, was tied for third place at 111 along with
Jay Klapper of Loganville, Ga. Finishing
another shot back at 112 and in a four way tie for fifth place were 1998 PPA
player-of-the-year Greg Ward, 1998 PPA
National champion Lewis Burton, 1998
ESPN TV series contestant
Bart Bason, and
1997 Spartanburg Open champion
Robert
Johnson.
The APA division 1998 National Champion Jeff Brown's final round 27 gave him a four
round total of 117 and a one stroke victory over Keith Waters and Terry Porter.
Pre-tournament favorite Donnie Carpenter finished another shot back at 119 and in a fourth
place tie with Billy Caudle.
