Danny McCaslin Fires a 23 in His Third Round to Clip
Bason by One-Stroke
Burlington, NC -
Danny McCaslin trailed local pro,
Bart Bason, by one-stroke entering the third
round of play in the Howard Loy Memorial tournament. McCaslin's final round of 23,
13-under par, was good enough to pass the second round leader, Bason, and secure a narrow
one-stroke victory. Danny McCaslin's total of 74, 34-under par, continues to tear of low
winning scores on the North Carolina State Tour in 1999.
With the exception of the Old Pro Classic played in Fayetteville, NC, each
tournament has seen at least scores after three rounds in the 70s. Danny McCaslin's score
of 74 marks the lowest score posted on the North Carolina tour in 1999 and comes just
weeks after Mike Brown broke the long
standing world record for four-rounds on
the covered course in Fayetteville with an amazing score of 90, 54-under par, for 72 holes
of play.
The win placed Danny McCaslin at the top of the NC points race clipping
Greg Newport by 0.5 points with a total of
164.5 points to date. Finishing tied for third at 78, 30-under par, were Randal Smith and
Rick Baird.
In the Amateur Division, Tommy Barbour claimed his first
ever state level victory in the amateur division. Barbour was the leader at 54 after two
rounds of play, which brought out the question if Barbour could close it out to claim his
first victory. Things became interesting, however, when Barbour could only get it to 30 in
the last round to end at 84. Ray Guthrie, who was in at 57 after two, fired a 27 to force
a playoff to determine the victor. The question if Barbour could close it out though was
quickly answered in the playoff when Barbour fired a 26 to beat Guthrie by eight strokes.
The North Carolina State Tour is next in action on May 15 and 16 in Rock
Hill, SC. The event on Sunday, May 16, is the Carolinas' Open and will count toward the
minimum tournament requirement on the South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia tours.
The Carolinas' Open begins at 9 AM and is a six round event. The defending champion is
Greg Ward who devastated the field in
Asheville, NC at last years Carolinas' Open with a 16 stroke victory for the six round
event. Plan on playing in this event to see if Ward can defend his title in this major
event. |
