Todd Fowler Wins NC/SC Tour Event in Asheville, NC
Asheville, NC - The second day on the
Asheville combined NC/SC weekend saw some better scoring as well as a player posting three
rounds of 9-under or better. Todd Fowler, 1997 SC PPA State Champion, fired rounds of 23,
27, and 26 to win the Pro Division by five shots over fellow Spartanburg pro Tony Pack.
The score of 74 matched the 54-hole tournament record set by Greg Newport in 1996.
However, the actual 54-hole record is still 71 set by Greg Ward in the 1998 Carolinas' Open.
Brian Hutchins led a tightly competitive APA field at 52 but held on to win by three
shots over Ray Guthrie for his first APA victory in his NC career. Hutchins, from Forest
City, NC, who trailed by two shots to Tommy Hutchinson after the first round, fired rounds
of 27, an APA best of the day 25, and 30 to claim his first NC APA victory. The score of
82, combined with a Saturday score of 90, gave him a two-day low score of 172, thus
claiming a state spot later in Durham. Guthrie made a twelve stroke improvement from
Saturday's play to finish second in the tournament. Donnie Carpenter, Conover, NC finished
third at 86.
The win by Fowler, Duncan, SC, was his second of the year, becoming the second player
on the NC tour to have multi-wins this season. His other victory was on May 15 in Rock
Hill. Pack's second place finish was his best ever on the NC tour since turning
professional in 1996. The state spot went to Todd Barfield, Fort Mill, SC, whom finished
tied for third with Robert Johnson and Michael Hitt at 80. Barfield also received a match
play spot, along with Tony Varnadore, Rock Hill, SC, who picked it up by finishing next at
81.
The North Carolina tour will play again in a doubleheader in High Point on Saturday,
June 19, with the first tournament starting at 9:00am and the second to start an hour
after the first ends.
The next time Asheville will be host for a tour event is Saturday and Sunday, August 22
& 23, when the SC tour takes place.
