Larry Simpson Wins NC/SC Tour Event in Asheville, NC
Asheville, NC - A total of 30
professionals and 13 amateurs competed in the second combined held NC/SC weekend tour
event of the season this past Saturday in Asheville. The site of the 1998 Carolinas' Open
and NCPPA State Championship featured higher scores than expected, with only one player
under 80 for the day, Larry Simpson, of Elon College, NC Simpson fired consistent rounds
of 26, 27, and 26 to shoot a final score of 79, two shots better than Robert Johnson, Lake
Wylie, S. C., who started at 31, but later fired rounds of 24 and 26 down the stretch to
take second place in the tournament.
Keith Waters, Raleigh, N. C. led from wire-to-wire to win his first APA tournament of
the season with a three-round score of 83. The win was by two shots over Tommy Hutchinson,

Simpson earlier in the week debated whether or not to play this weekend due to his work
schedule. Obviously, he chose the right decision in traveling to the city furthest west
on the NC State tour. With the victory, Simpson grabs the NC Qualifying spot and NC Match
Play spot, as well. Johnson took a match play spot as well for finishing second.
Rounding out top five in the Pro Division were Todd Fowler, Duncan, S. C., Bob Haizlip,
Whitsett, N. C., and C. L. Jones, Danville, Va., all shooting 82. Fifteen spots were paid
out in the Pro Division with 89 holding a three-way split for one spot.
