Paul Johns Wins His Second Great Lakes Event of 1999
in Charleston, WV
Charleston, WV Paul Johns of Columbus, OH won his second
tournament and in the process secured his second spot in the state finals. Paul came from
two shots back with a final round score of 27, 9-under par and a final score of 84, 24
under par for the tournament. The win took me by surprise Paul said, since the course
usually yields lower scores Paul was anticipating finishing in the middle of the pack.
Pauls playing partner John Ventura
took second, much to his surprise, with a score of 86, 22-under par. This tournament is
considered a major on the Great Lakes Tour and was held on the site of the Northern Open
Tournament, which is to be held at the Charleston facility in mid August. Sunday just like
the day before was hot with temperatures in the upper 80s and the putting was just
as hot.
Heading into the final round Paul was two shots back of a trio of
players Dave Nutini, Todd Viau, and Mike ORourke. The final round most of the
players seemed to struggle with course and the scores indicate that everyone was having a
hard time with shooting a low score. The match play finals was won by John Ventura and
earned him a spot in the state finals.
The Great Lakes next tournament is in Erie, Pa on June 5
and 6, 1999. The North Carolina and South Carolina tours are next in action on June 5 and
6, 1999 in Asheville, NC. The Virginia tour next plays on June 5 and 6, 1999 in
Fredericksburg, VA.
