1999 Clayton Cup to Feature Third Team and New
Format
The 1999 Clayton Cup competition will feature teams from North Carolina,
Virginia, and, for the first time, South Carolina in a new format designed to accommodate
three teams. The three teams will compete against each other in two-days of competition on
October 23 and 24 (may be moved to October 30 and 31 if any of the State Championships are
rained out) in Wilmington, NC. Each tour will field a 10 person team of professional
players for the 1999 Clayton Cup. The event will start at 12 Noon on Saturday and 10 AM on
Sunday to allow for the return trip of the players.

The format for Saturday will consist of five 36-hole better ball
matches with two-players from each team competing against each other. These five matches
will award 4 points to the winning two-player team, 2 point to the second place two-player
team, and 0 points to the remaining team. The next competition on Saturday will be five
36-hole alternate shot matches with two-player teams. The points will be awarded in the
same way as for the better-ball matches. Saturday will close with five 36-hole two-man
matches (medal play) with the same points format as the alternate shot and better-ball
competition. A total of 90 points (30 for better-ball, 30 for alternate-shot, and 30 for
two-man teams) will be awarded on Saturday with the maximum a single team can win equal to
60 points.
Sunday will feature ten individual matches pitting individuals from each
team in three-person matches. Each match will award 2 points to the winning player, 1
point to the second place player, and 0 points to the remaining player. A total of three
rounds of competition will be played with a total of 30 points available each round for a
total of 90 points available on Sunday.
The winning team will be decided by total points accumulated over the two
day of team competition. Ties in matches will result in the splitting of the points for
the respective places of finish. For example, on Saturday, if 2 two-person teams tie for
the low score in the better ball match, those team would be awarded 3 points each (4
points for winning plus 2 points for second divided by two teams). Similar splits are
possible including all three teams or individuals tying.
Questions regarding the 1999 Clayton Cup should be directed toward the
respective committee members from each tour:

Carolina - Rick Baird, South Carolina - Michael Hitt,
