Neumann Wins 1998 Virginia State Championship
Norfolk,
VA - Peter Neumann
ended the 1998 Virginia State tour by winning his first Virginia State Championship. The
victory at the Virginia State Championship capped off a year that saw him win the
1998 Maryland Open in June and a state event in Newport News, VA
in April.
After playing poorly in the warm-up event held the day prior to the State
Championship, the victory came as somewhat of a surprise to Neumann. The $550 first place
prize money and the points toward Virginia Player of the Year assured that Neumann will be
named 1998 Virginia Player of the Year.
In the hotly contested stroke average award for 1998,
Brad Lebo, 1997 Virginia
State Champion, came into the State Championship with a sizeable lead only to see it
evaporate during the first two rounds of play. While Lebo shot 58 over the last two
rounds, he was only able to make up one stroke on Neumann.
In 1996, Neumann won the North Carolina State Championship in New Bern,
NC. His victory in the Virginia State Championship marks only the second time that a
player has won both the North Carolina and Virginia State Championship. The other player
being Danny Dore who won
the North Carolina State Championship in 1990 at Eden, NC and the Virginia State
Championship in 1995 and 1996. |
