rallied in the third and fourth rounds of the 1998 Maryland Open to catch Rusty Taylor who had
opened the tournament with rounds of 27 and 26. Rusty Taylor took a 5 stroke lead into the
third round of the Maryland Open and after shooting a 6-under par 30 still held a 5 stroke
lead over the eventual winner, Peter Neumann, entering the fourth round.
Shooting a 13, 5-under par, on the front nine of the fourth and final
round, Peter Neumann pulled even with Rusty Taylor who shot an even par 18 on the front
nine. Neumann closed the final round with another 13, 5-under par, on the back nine to
finish 2 strokes ahead of Rusty Taylor who finished alone in second at 116, 28-under par.
Rounding out the money winner were Danny Dore and Manfred
Stewart, finishing tied for third at 118, 26-under par, and Brad Lebo and Dave Taylor who tied for
fourth at 119, 25-under par. Brad Lebo was the defending Maryland Open Champion from 1997
and the current Virginia State Champion.
The win at the 1998 Maryland Open was the second major victory in Peter
Neumann's career on the Virginia State Tour. His first major victory on the Virginia State
Tour came in 1995 with his victory in Richmond, VA at the Virginia Open.
