Lacey Breaks Course Record and Wins Southern Open
Augusta,
GA - By coincidence, it has been over 19 years since a score of 19 has been shot in PPA® National Tournament competition. Kevin Lacey fired this
course record setting score to take the lead in the first round of the second day of
competition in the Augusta, GA PPA® $10,000 Southern
Open Championship and never looked back. Lacey captured the title after an eight-round
total of 212, 76 under par. Lacey, a 27-year-old computer programmer, sponsored on the PPA® tour by Sureshot Redemption, led the field after shooting a
nearly perfect round. The only hole keeping Lacey from a perfect 18 was hole number ten.
According to Lacey, "After nine holes I was thinking about getting into contention
for the lead, not a perfect score." Lacey held his lead throughout the rest of the
day, shooting 28, 27 and 26 in the last three rounds.
National Touring Pro Lewis
Burton of Lawrenceville, Ga. and Saturday's leader after four rounds, Greg Ward of Loganville,
Ga., trailed by two with 215, 73 under par to tie for the runner-up position. Burton, who
won the 1997 $10,000 Commissioner's Cup in Augusta, shot rounds of 27, 24, 26, 26 while
Ward shot rounds of 29, 27, 27, 28.
In the APA Division, Saturday's leader Donnie Carpenter of Hickory, N.C. maintained his
