Barfield Captures the $10,000 Northern Open
Willoughby,
Ohio - PPA National Touring Pro Todd Barfield of Fort
Mill, S.C., captured the title after an eight round total of 207, 81 under par, at the
$10,000 Northern Open on Sunday, August 16th.
The 26 year-old graduate student and 1997 South Carolina Player of the
Year pulled away from Saturday's leader by two strokes when he shot a 24, 12 under par
during the fifth round of tournament competition. Barfield held his lead, distancing
himself further away from the field, by shooting 26, 26, 27 in the sixth, seventh and
eighth rounds respectively.
National Touring Pro Darrell Britt of
Loganville, Ga., came from behind to finish with 209, 79 under par, to claim the runner-up
position. Britt, who was tied for fifth in a three-way split after the first day, shot
rounds of 29, 24, 25, 25.
"The whole key was consistency," said Barfield of his first
major tournament victory. "I shot pretty much the same low rounds the whole way and
that's what pushed me through. It surprised me, though, since I really have been under the
weather lately." With a chuckle he added, "I guess I need to get sick more
often."
In the APA Division, a surprising comeback, from Saturday's sixth place
putter, Jim Cruse of Baltimore, Ohio, enabled him to capture the APA title with a 223, 65
under par, followed by Tony Davenport of LaVergne, Tennessee with a 225, 63 under par.
Cruse's victory is his second national title of the season.
