Newport News, VA - For the third straight year, and second time on a Virginia
course, the PPA Players from North Carolina won the Clayton Cup. The Clayton Cup was held
on October 24th and 25th in Newport News, VA.
The Clayton Cup is an annual competition between the PPA members of the Virginia and
North Carolina State Tours. Each state tour qualifies 10 PPA players to represent the tour
in the annual event. The Clayton Cup is named in honor of Don Clayton, the founder of
Putt-Putt Golf Courses of America
The competition is held over two days in which the players compete in best-ball,
alternate shot, individual match-play, and two-man team match play. The format awards 40
points during the first day of play and 45 points during the second day of play. The
points are awarded as follows:

The defending team needs 42.5 points to retain the Clayton Cup while the
challenging team needs 43 points to win the cup.
The Virginia tour won the inaugural Clayton Cup held in 1994 in Richmond, VA and
successfully defended the Clayton Cup in 1995 in Greensboro, NC. North Carolina won the
Clayton Cup for the first time in Fredericksburg, VA in 1996 and defended it successfully
in High Point, NC in 1997.
