Beckerman Kicks off the Week by Winning the 1997
Orange Lake Open
Orlando, FL - Leading off the week's events in our National
Championships, the $2,000 Orange Lake Open was won by South Euclid, Ohio pro Roger
Beckerman. This Regional Pro led the field wire-to-wire to shoot a 71, defeating 68 pros
in the first tournament competition in the nationals week.
According to Beckerman, who had a disappointing year of
tournament play ,"I wanted to have a strong game focus for this tournament."
That strong game focus gave Beckerman the edge in an extremely competitive match. "I
was surprised the scores were as low as they were tonight and that the competition was as
fierce as it was." Beckerman's 3-round scores of 23, 25, 23 earned first place prize
money of $300 and a regional spot in the Match Play Championship.
Beckerman, the 1996 Match Play Champion, won one of the
first night-time tournaments held in the many years of PPA History. Buddy Taylor, PPA Hall
of Famer, does remember the PPA holding national tournaments in the evenings back in 1965.
The cooler temperatures certainly played into Beckerman's hands.
Robb Titchell, from Columbus, Ohio, earned the Amateur
Putters Association title during the Monday night tournament and set the pace for the
remainder of the week in APA competition.
