Cliff Matthews Wins
1995 Greensboro, NC Open by Two
Strokes
Greensboro, NC - 11 June 1995 -
Cliff Matthews of
Haltom, Texas, won the 1995 $1,000 PPA Open played in Greensboro, NC on June 11th.
Matthews three round score of 85, 23 under par, was two strokes better than a trio of
players including Tom Butler
of Erlanger, KY, Peter
Neumann of Midland, VA, and Brad Lebo of Philadelphia,
PA.
Matthews play improved with each round as his three round scores
of 30-28-27 will attest. Playing with 1995 Putt-Putt Skins TV contestant
Mike Brown and fellow Texan
Rainey Statum,
Matthews overcame some early hot putting by Tom Butler, whose first two round scores of
27-28 gave him a three shot lead over Matthews heading into the final round.
Matthews also overcame a penalty stroke for failure to sign his scorecard. "I
have never done that before," said Matthews. "But as mad as I was at
myself, I was more disappointed that I cost Mike and Rainey a stroke as well."
Matthews victory earned him his first National Title as a member
of the Professional Putters Association with Pro status. "It is a great honor
and opportunity to prove something to myself and show people that I am able to compete
with the best players," said Matthews this spring when notified that he had attained
National Pro status. His win at Greensboro should remove any doubt.
Tom Butler Lead Point Chase
Tom Butler continued his consistent putting this season and moved
to the top of the PPA National Pro Points Leader Board heading into the Martinez
tournament. As the points leader through the Greensboro tournament, Butler has
earned the privilege of driving a Buick Riviera while in Martinez, compliments of the PPA
Home Office. |
