Richmond, VA - The weekend began with the $10,000 PPA
Match-Play Classic. In the pro division, Ron Frederick, a native of Toledo,
Ohio, now living in California, captured the pro title by defeating Tom Spiker
of Millersville, Maryland, 6 and 5.
Spiker defeated Ken Cook, Mark Coup, Rick Shelton, Darrell
Anderson, John Crawford and Buddy Taylor to reach the finals. Frederick defeated
Jeff Estep, David Jones, Jeff McDonald, Greg Roberts, Rainey Statum, Dean
Dwiggins and Spiker to capture the title.
In the APA division, Jim Schafer of Norcross, Georgia,
successfully defended his Match-Play title by defeating Raymond Burke of
Harrison, Ohio, in the title match. Schafer defeated 6 putters along the way
including Richie Godfrey, Scott Buddie, John Norman, Tony Davenport and Marty
Handschuh to win the title from Burke 2 and 1.
In the novice division, Essen Daley of Virginia Beach,
Virginia, defeated Paul Brightbill also from Virginia Beach, 5 and 4, to capture
the novice division title. |
