Danny Edwards in PPA Winner's Circle Louisville, KY - May 28-29, 1983 - Danny Edwards has spent the last 10 years playing in Professional Putters Association tournament. Sometimes earning a paycheck, but more often than not left with "if only's." No more. Edwards, a 34-year old executive with Georgia Power Company in Atlanta, moved from 12th place to the winner's circle over the last four rounds to capture the "National Non-Winner's Invitational Tournament" held in Louisville, Kentucky, over Memorial Day Weekend 1983 with a 49-under par score of 239. With only those professionals who had failed to capture a National PPA event participating, the tournament promised a first-time winner. "It took me so long to win the first one, it's all I can do to keep the tears back," said Edwards. Runner-up Rex Thayer, a left-hander from Dayton, Ohio, held the lead for much of the final four rounds, but faltered in the stretch, finishing at 240, 48-under par. "I was hitting the ball very well, but just couldn't get anything to fall on the back nine (of the final round)," said Thayer. Rudy Cuellar and Vince Batten, both from Houston, Texas, finished with scores of 241, 47-under par, and tied for third place. In addition to first place prize money of $800, Edwards also won a qualifying berth for the $96,000 National Match-Play Championship to be played in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in August 1983. In the APA Division, two Louisville amateurs battled for the title for two days, with Randy Thomas shooting a 10-under par 26 for his final round to take first-place honors over Fred Karem, who led going into the second day. Third place went to Ron Nelson of Dayton, Ohio. Qualifying spots for the National Amateur Match-Play Championship went to Kurt Armstrong of Louisville and Peter Neumann of Dayton, Ohio.
