Browning, Crawford, and Jones Capture National Titles

Fayetteville, NC - Thirty-two year old Ray Browning of Cleveland, Ohio won his second National Championship, while 27 year old John Crawford was winning the Regional Pro Division, and Austin Jones, a 15 year old from Springfield, Ohio took the top honors in the APA division.

Browning, who won the 1975 National Championship in Columbus, Ohio became the third person in PPA history to win the National Championship twice. Vance Randall (1967 and 1969) and Robert Smith (1972 and 1974) only waited two years to claim their second title, but Browning decided to wait five. Ray won the 1975 Championship with a score of 92 under par and had an identical 92 under to win Sunday - only it took an additional 72 holes.

Browning, tied for 15th place at 27 under par after Friday's play, moved into second place, 3 shots behind Gary English of Orlando, Florida, with a solid 36 under on Saturday, and fired 29 under par on Sunday to hold a one shot margin over Jim Borchelt of Cincinnati, who was also trying to win his second Nationals. English finished third at 89 under and Marc Portugal of Waco, Texas, the first day leader was fourth at 87 under.

Crawford, from Burlington, North Carolina, finished Friday's four rounds with a 3 stroke lead over the field of 31 regional pros and finished the final four rounds on Saturday with the same three stroke margin over second place finisher Jim Manning of Orlando, Florida. Roger Freeman, Gastonia, North Carolina and Bryon Oakley from Burlington finished third with totals of 236 - 52 under par for the eight round Championship.

In the APA division, Austin Jones picked up 8 shots on leader Nick Gill of Gretna, Louisiana, to win by a two shot margin 357 - 75 under par. Jones had a score of 30 on his 12th and final round, while Gill was struggling to a 38 on the very difficult #3 course in Fayetteville. Terry Phillips of Gastonia, North Carolina finished with a 9 under 27 to tie Gill for second place.
