Buddy Taylor Wins
1978 World Championship

Columbus, OH - 42 year old Buddy Taylor of Baltimore, MD, Putt-Putt golf course owner and 18 year veteran of the Professional Putters Association, won the World Putting Championship and $10,000 this past weekend by defeating former US National Champion Steve McPherson of Dallas, TX, 4 and 3 in the 36-hole match play finals. Taylor had to go to the final hole in his semi-final win over Rick Anderson of Wilmington, N.C. The 24 year old McPherson defeated rookie pro Ed Haggerty of Charlotte, N.C., in his semi-final match to reach the finals and win $5,000 runner-up prize money.

Quarter-finalists included: Wesley Beck, Atlanta, GA, Philip Davis, Winston-Salem, N.C., Robert Smith, Dallas, TX, and Bruce Kaiser, Cincinnati, OH.

In the Amateur Division, 17 year old Doug Baer of Jacksonville, FL, defeated former National Champion, 19 year old Ron Burkhard. Baer, who played on the 1975 Jacksonville, FL, Junior Putters of America National Championship team defeated Burkhard 3 and 2 in their 36-hole match.

Baer defeated Byron Yee of Oklahoma City, OK, 4 and 3, and Burkhard defeated Brad Bonsack of Lake Charles, LA, in his semi-final match.

Quarter-finalist included: Kimberly Taylor, 13 year old daughter of the new PPA World Champion Buddy Taylor, Baltimore, MD, Owen Perillo of Philadelphia, PA, Keith Arnold of Dothan, AL, and Marc Portugal of Waco, TX.
