Columbus, OH - Eugene Carter, a Putt-Putt Course owner from Johannesburg, South Africa, scored a hole in one on the 18th hole in the 1977 World Putting Finals for a 1 up victory over 16 year old Gary Justus from Rockville, MD and took the $10,000 prize money and the World Putting Champion Title out of this country for the first time.

On his way to the title, Carter defeated Gary Miller of Columbus, GA in his first match 2 and 1. Robert Smith, two-time National Champion from Dallas, TX was Carter's next victim in the semi-finals by a score of 6 and 5.

In the other first round matches, Robert Smith defeated Steve Lyon of Greensboro, NC. Gary Justus defeated David Gies of Fayetteville, NC in sudden-death and former National Champion Ray Browning defeated the 1977 Putter of the Year, Randy Stone, 2 and 1. In the other semi-final match, Gary Justus defeated Ray Browning 1 up.

In the Amateur Division of the World, Eddie Michalko of Lake Charles, LA defeated Steve Josey from Augusta, GA by a score of 4 and 3 to win the title of 1977 World Amateur Putting Champion. The other six finalists in the Amateur Division were Edgar Haggerty of Charlotte, NC, Rick Reed of Toledo, OH, Keith Smith of Dallas, TX, Thomas Robben of Topeka, KS, Paul Johns of Dothan, AL, and Ron Frederick of Toledo, OH.
