Jim Borchelt Wins
1977 National Championship

Columbus, OH - After 144 holes of competition, Jim Borchelt of Cincinnati, Ohio found his score of 196 (92 under par) only good enough for a three way tie with Putter of the Year Randy Stone of Gastonia, NC and a newcomer to the tour Bill Herbert of Lake Charles, LA. Borchelt immediately fired a 23 in the 18-hole playoff to lay claim to the 1st place prize money of $2,000 and the title of 1977 National Champion.

With 7 rounds completed and only 18 holes left to play, three men were tied at 80 under par, Borchelt, David Gies of Fayetteville, NC who ran into trouble on the 15th hole and finished with a 27 and a tie for 7th place in the tournament and veteran Buddy Taylor of Baltimore, MD who could do no better than 8 under for a total of 88 under par and 9th place.

Vance Randall, two-time winner of this event and the leader after the 1st day at 60 under par finished in a tie for 5th at 90 under par with Bruce Kaiser of Cincinnati, Ohio who was out of the money after the 1st day but had rounds of 24, 23, and 21 for the best score shot during the second day.

Steve Guyton of Columbus, Ohio scored a hole in one on the final hole in Amateur Division to beat Marc Portugal from Waco, TX by one shot. Guyton's score for the 144 holes was 203, 85 under par. Eddie Michalko, this year's World Amateur Champion and last year's Amateur Champion Ron Burkhard of Columbus, Ohio tied for 3rd place with a score of 207, 81 under par.
